How to Prepare Your RV for Winter Storage in Texas

Texas winters are milder than up north, but Weatherford still gets hard freezes, and a freeze is all it takes to crack a water line or kill a battery. If your RV is going to sit for a few weeks or a few months this winter, an hour or two of prep now will save you a repair bill in the spring.

Here is a straightforward checklist that works for travel trailers, fifth wheels, and motorhomes stored here in North Texas.

1. Decide: Winterize the Water System or Keep It Ready?

In Parker County, overnight lows regularly drop below freezing from December through February, and a single night in the 20s can burst a line.

  • If you will not use the RV until spring, fully winterize it: drain the fresh water tank, water heater, and all lines, bypass the water heater, and run RV antifreeze (the pink, non-toxic kind) through every faucet, shower, toilet, and drain trap.
  • If you plan to take it out mid-winter, at minimum drain all tanks and lines between trips and leave cabinet doors open so warm air can circulate if you run heat.
  • Do not forget the outside shower, ice maker, and washing machine hookups if you have them — those lines are often missed and often the first to split.

2. Clean It Out — Inside and Out

  • Empty the fridge, prop it open, and leave a box of baking soda inside. Any food left behind will draw mice and ants, even in winter.
  • Remove all perishables, canned goods that can freeze and burst, and anything liquid.
  • Wash the exterior and inspect the roof and seams. Texas sun cracks sealant all year long. Reseal any cracked lap sealant or loose trim now, before winter rain finds its way in.
  • Clean and condition slide-out seals, and retract slides for storage unless your manufacturer says otherwise.

3. Take Care of Tires, Batteries, and Fuel

  • Inflate tires to the manufacturer's maximum cold pressure, and park on boards or pads if you are on gravel or dirt — it helps prevent flat spots and moisture wicking.
  • Cover tires if they will sit in direct sun. Even winter sun in Texas degrades rubber.
  • Batteries: fully charge them, clean the terminals, and either disconnect them or keep them on a maintainer. A discharged battery will freeze and crack in cold weather. At Anchor, many of our covered and enclosed spaces have electric hookups, which makes keeping a battery maintainer plugged in simple.
  • Add fuel stabilizer to the tank, run the engine or generator long enough to circulate it, and change the generator oil if it is due.

4. Keep Pests and Moisture Out

  • Seal openings around pipes and wiring with steel wool or foam. Mice love a warm, empty RV in January.
  • Put moisture absorbers inside, crack a vent if you have vent covers, and avoid plastic covers that trap condensation against the body. Breathable RV covers are the better choice if you store outdoors.
  • Set traps or deterrents inside and check the rig every few weeks if you can.

5. Choose the Right Storage for a Texas Winter

Where you park it matters as much as how you prep it:

  • Covered storage keeps sun, hail, and rain off the roof — the main threats in Texas. At Anchor Boat RV & Self Storage in Weatherford, covered spaces run 30x12 for $125/month, 40x12 for $139/month, and 50x12 for $200/month.
  • Enclosed storage adds walls and a door for full protection and extra security: 30x14 for $225/month and 40x14 for $250/month.
  • We also offer self storage units for the gear that comes out of the RV, electric hookups in select spaces, and an on-site dump station so you can empty and flush tanks properly before you store — and again when you pull it out in the spring.

A quick visit every month to check tire pressure, battery charge, and for any signs of leaks or pests will catch small problems before they become expensive ones.
